What is a Physician Assistant?
A Physician Assistant, or PA, is a licensed and highly skilled health care professional, trained to provide patient evaluation, education, and health care services. A PA works with a physician to provide medical care and guidance needed by a patient. They receive specialized medical training in a program associated with a medical school that includes classroom studies and clinical experience. They are licensed to practice in California after passing a rigorous national examination. A PA must be supervised by a physician and the supervising physician must be available by being at the same location or by telephone or other electronic communication. The office charges for seeing the PA are the same as seeing the physician, as the physician oversees the work of the PA. Most insurance policies, including Medicare, reimburses either directly or through the supervising physician, for services provided by the PA in the medical office, hospitals and skilled nursing facilities.
A PA performs many diagnostic, preventative, and health maintenance services. These include but are not limited to:
- Taking health histories
- Performing physical examinations
- Ordering X-rays and laboratory tests
- Performing routine diagnostic tests
- Establishing diagnoses
- Treating and managing patient health problems
- Administering immunizations and injections
- Instruction and counseling patients
- Providing continuing care to patients in the home, hospital and extended care facility
- Providing referrals within the health care system
- Performing minor surgery
- Providing preventative health care services
- Act as first or second assistants during surgery
- Responding to life-threatening emergencies
- May issue a written drug order based on the supervising physician’s prescription order

Shella- Receptionist
Patients often tell us that Shella takes a lot of stress out of the scheduling process. Her knowledge of the referral community, health plans, and the needs of otolaryngology patients often make her difficult job seem easy. She is usually the first voice heard on the telephone, and the first face seen by our patients, and she is aware of the importance of that job.
With Shella on the front desk, our patients can be assured that they have had the best support in preparing to see Dr. Davis, and the doctor can be assured that all of the patient’s information is available during the examination and/or treatment. |
