ENT Doctors Offer Tips for a Healthy New Year
Alexandria, Va. – As 2008 approaches, the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery (AAO-HNS) would like to offer some helpful tips to start the New Year off right.
“Ear, nose, and throat health problems are some of the most common ailments that Americans face,” says Jeffrey Spiegel, MD, associate professor of otolaryngology – head and neck surgery at the Boston University School of Medicine. “From colds and the flu in the winter to allergies in the spring, a few simple tips can help people enjoy a more productive, healthful 2008.”

Update on Balloon Catheter Sinusotomy
In July 2007, a study was published in the Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery Journal that reported on the results and safety of Sinus Surgery using the Balloon Catheter. This study reviewed the results of 115 patients at 9 clinical centers over a 6 month period. The Balloon Catheter technology was found to be safe and effective. Patients experienced improvement of their symptoms following their surgery. In addition, the success rate was 97% which compares favorable to traditional endoscopic surgery that has a success rate of 75-90%.

The following sheets describe nine of the most important allergenic weeds. Although individual species are described on each sheet, in most cases other members of the respective genera are of similar importance (e.g., although short ragweed is a very widespread and important species, other species of ragweed are also of allergenic importance). The sheets are arranged alphabetically by genus.

Important Allergenic Grasses
The following ten sheets describe four of the most important allergenic grasses. There are many other allergenic species, and some are difficult to distinguish unless they are in bloom. Bermuda, Johnson and Timothy grasses are among those that are easily recognized in the field, the former two even before blooming.
